Our neighbourhood during our stay in New York was Chelsea. It is situated between West 14th and West 29th Streets and between 6th and 11th Avenues. The avenues offer classic Manhattan architecture and 8th Avenue between West 23rd and 14th Streets has been a "gay village" since the late 90's.
There you will see lots of buff lads with lap dogs and bars, restaurants and shops catering to them.
Most of the streets running east and west are residential, lined with trees
and attractive, gentrified brownstones.
The area is in constant flux these days with warehouse spaces between 10th and 11th Avenues between 20th and 29th Streets being quickly filled by the fashionable Chelsea Galleries.
Here John catches us riding a service elevator to upper floors of galleries.
And now for something totally different, between 8th and 9th Avenues and 20th and 21st Street we find the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in which this Chapel to the Good Shepherd (1888) is considered the architectural "jewel".
10th Avenue is much more workaday so little treats like this jolly "Grand Opening" fellow delight the eye.
It's also the corner of 10th Ave and 20th Street that offers the most northerly entrance to the High Line Garden which extends down to Gansevoort Street and will one day climb to West 34th Street. We love the stacked parking to the left.
Ever in flux and full of colourful locals Chelsea is a great place to visit.
